What was Toledo originally called? ›

When Toledo, Spain was founded in the 5th century BC, it was known by the Romans as “Toletum.” It became known as “Toledo” after the arrival of the Moors, whose Arabic dialects heavily influenced Spanish names and phrases. Although many people assume Toledo, OH was named after Toledo, Spain, historians aren't sure.

The Toledo Rockets are the intercollegiate athletic teams that represent the University of Toledo. The Rockets compete at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I level as a member of the Mid-American Conference (MAC). The school's colors are midnight blue and gold.

Toledo is considered most representative of Spanish culture, and its historic centre was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1986. Its rocky site is traversed by narrow, winding streets, with steep gradients and rough surfaces, centring on the Plaza del Zocodover.

Rocky the Rocket was created during the 1966-67 academic year by the Spirits and Traditions Committee, a facet of Student Government. Various enthusiastic students were selected to “suit up” for a few athletic events to spark Rocket spirit.
